Eric Jones aka The Doctor Dapper and founder of the luxury shoe brand LFLS (Like Father Like Son) is a vibe. When you enter his world, you’re in for an experience. Whether he’s having a mixer event getting lit with his guests and people at his social networking company, The Outlet LA, on Instagram giving knowledge and tips on how to become an entrepreneur, or just how to elevate and become the best version of yourself. He does it effortlessly with a cool relaxed demeanor. Though you can feel there’s an intensity and passion behind every business tip, affirmation, quote, and dance move.
Dap as his many friends like to call him, came up with the idea for his own designer show company in 2015 while an undergrad at the University of Arkansas. The inspiration to start was driven by his humble upbringing where he saw his mother making ends meet.
He spent a lot of time in the church as a child, his mother made sure to dress him nicely with what she could afford. Even at a young age, his mom taught him the importance of dressing well and he discovered early on how to use fashion to express himself beyond his circumstances.
It was his modest upbringing and the discipline he learned from his parents that help shape Eric into the man and entrepreneur he is today. He doesn’t take anything for granted, his journey, the wins, the losses, he appreciates it all. It’s that transparency, that realness, to share what it’s like to become a successful businessman that has resonates with so many.
Eric has always been different than most people by seeing himself as the creator of his own path. In 2015, he secured the LLC for his business and his mother offered her support right away and helped him to get it off the ground by acquiring a couple of credit cards to support his business. However a few weeks before his graduation in 2016, he suffered an unimaginable loss, his mother passed. That would send others on a downward spiral. Eric chose to honor his mother and pushed through his pain by figuring out how to pursue his business on his own.
What’s inspiring about Eric’s story is his mental toughness and belief to rise above adversity. It’s this mindset that has carried him through as an entrepreneur and helped him in dealing with the difficult times all while inspiring others.
What the past two years of the pandemic have shown everyone is you have to adapt and find ways to support yourself. The idea of being an entrepreneur may seem glamorous but the reality is you gotta put in the work to be successful. Having security in the job market has changed and it’s really up to the individual to decide what they want their future and finances to be.
Eric shared some gems on how you can thrive as an entrepreneur in uncertain times and be successful.
Why are people afraid to venture into entrepreneurship?
“People have been domesticated into working a 9-5 and having that paycheck coming in every two weeks, it’s comfortable. A lot of people are afraid of uncertainty. That’s why a lot of people hesitate. That’s why you got to have more story and less glory. Because what you end up having is a lot of Watcherpeunears. The true entrepreneurs want more story and not all the glitz and glam. That inspires them.”
How has the pandemic changed the game of people wanting to take ownership into their hands?
“The pandemic caused a lot of people to pivot. The pandemic pivot. You realize that the thought of security in a job is not a real thing. Because anything can happen. The business shuts down, companies cut back. You lose your job. But you gotta pay rent on the first. That’s not gonna stop.”
“So I think what the pandemic taught a lot of people is what do I have to fall back on? If I can’t fall back on myself? It took a lot of people to go inside, within themselves, and look at their true talents, their passion, and purpose and realize that if they don’t like their circumstances, change it. It forced a lot of people to change their mindset and get off their asses and do something. Because nobody’s coming to save you. It’s that fight or flight mentality. I gotta go fight for my shit. A lot of people started investing in themselves more, started to seek knowledge and level up.”
How do you as an entrepreneur tap into peoples’ greatness?
“Within my coaching, I focus on personal branding. Storytelling, cross collaborations, and features. I tap into shifting their mindset and into taking accountability. What a lot of people gotta understand is there is nobody holding your hand when it comes to entrepreneurship telling you what to do. How to do it. It’s all on you in order to get that paycheck.”
